Rainbow Daiquiris

I’ve always associated the word “daiquiri” with slushy fruit drinks, like strawberry daiquiris. But turns out that the classic daiquiri isn’t a blended drink at all.

The classic daiquiri is just white rum, lime juice, and simple syrup:
1.5 oz white rum
1 oz lime juice
0.5 oz simple syrup

It’s very similar to a gimlet, just with rum instead of vodka. I think I prefer the vodka-based gimlet, just because it doesn’t add that extra rum flavor, and it leaves a cleaner taste in your mouth. But I liked the plain daiquiri too.

After making some strawberry cupcakes, I had some strawberry puree left over, so I thought, why not try making a strawberry daiquiri?

2 oz strawberry puree

It had a really nice strawberry flavor, and it didn’t taste overly alcoholic. I liked this better than the plain daiquiri.

After making the strawberry daiquiri, I thought, can I adapt this recipe to other fruit? That is, can I just make a daiquiri out of any fruit, by mixing together
0.5 oz ___ liqueur
1 oz light rum
1 oz lime juice
0.5 oz simple syrup
2 oz ___ puree
where ___ is the fruit? There’s only one way to find out.

Since I had mango puree left over from making mango cupcakes, I tried making a mango daiquiri.

I replaced the strawberry liqueur with mango rum, since I had that on hand. And of course, I used mango puree instead of strawberry puree. The mango flavor wasn’t as strong as the strawberry flavor, I think because the lime juice overwhelmed it. Maybe mango just can’t stand up to other flavors as well as strawberry can, just like in the Sprinkles cupcakes I was making. The mango daiquiri was still pretty good, though. I’ll have to try it with more mango rum and more mango puree next time.

I made a red daiquiri, and then a yellow one. So naturally, green is next. As luck would have it, BevMo was having a sale on some kiwi liqueur I had never heard of (regularly $21.99, on sale for $6.99!).

I used a bit more kiwi liqueur than strawberry or mango in the previous recipes, just because I thought the kiwi might get easily overwhelmed by everything else. I thought this drink was a little too acidic, since the kiwi and the lime were both pretty sour. I liked the strawberry and mango better.

Blueberries were on sale at a local market, so I decided to make a blueberry daiquiri next.

1 oz blueberry schnapps
1 oz light rum
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
2 oz muddled blueberries

I avoided using the blender, just because I’ve never had very good luck blending blueberries, so I muddled them instead. I also increased the amount of blueberry schnapps and decreased the amount of lime juice as compared to the amounts in the strawberry daiquiri, which seemed to work out well. Nice blueberry flavor without being too sour. I’d definitely try this one again.

A rainbow of daiquiris. Well, almost. Nothing’s actually blue in nature…
